One of our honored dinner guests in June was Mr. Walter H.
Stewart (85th, Co. B & Co. D) who had educated me about much
regarding life in the 10th during WWII. Additionally, his
connection to the 1946 historical novella about the 10th
titled “Night Climb” by Frank Harper was most interesting.
A copy of the book (see attached photo) was on hand and we
shared a passage from it between libations and good food.
For our December luncheon, we hope to have a more varied
group as well as one or more WWII era gentlemen again. We
also look forward to modern day 10th (Light) Mountaineers,
both active and veterans plus relatives and friends joining
us. Additionally, we are bending every effort to be graced
with the presence of at least member of a Gold Star family.
We are planning a raffle this time and as per last time, we
encourage everyone to bring at least one photo or memento of
a beloved 10th Mountaineer, past or present. Stories and
sharing memories about them are most welcome as are those of
new generations plus of course, their fond hopes and plans
for the future. Yes, please brag about your children
grandchildren and great grandchildren!
The New York Metro Chapter is planning to contribute very
soon to the Adopt-A-Platoon Program that Col. Mike Plummer
(Ret.) of Ft. Drum supervises. If you would like to
contribute, please mail items to me at
32-22 61st STREET, WOODSIDE, N.Y. 11377.
WE NEED VARIOUS SUNDRIES AND NON-PERISHABLE ITEMS. THESE
INCLUDE SOCKS, TEE SHIRTS, DRY PACKAGED SNACKS, CHAPSTICKS,
PLAYING CARDS and more.
Please join the New England Chapter members as they again
this year celebrate the life-accomplishments of one of the
world's most renowned ski instructors and pay tribute to

The Biathlon that we sponsor will be Sunday, January 14,
2018 at the Auburn Ski Hut at Boreal Ridge. This event has
been going on for a good 30 years and I've been involved for
the last dozen or so years. This is a cross country and
shooting event open to all all ages and if you have never
seen a Biathlon in action I urge you to come to the event in
January. In the past, SN members took an active role in
setting up the event but now that has been completely taken
over by the Auburn ski club members. I will say a few words
at the closing ceremony and then give medals to the winners
but basically everything is done by the Auburn ski club.
Riva Ridge/Mt. Belvedere Luncheon is scheduled for Saturday,
February 17, 2018 and will be held at the Old Spaghetti
Factory in Redwood City. We have been here several times
before and it seems to be a nice venue for our gathering.
So, if you didn't make the luncheon last month we hope to
see you in February!
Our Wine Tasting Picnic will be Saturday, May 19, 2018 and
we will again meet at Sebastiani Winery in Sonoma. We had a
great turnout last May and everyone had a wonderful time.
Again, we hope to see you there!
Val Rios will be giving further information closer to the
date of the events but is hoping you will mark them on your
There is now a Sierra Nevada Chapter Facebook page so please
log on and request to be a member. The other day Val Rios
posted pictures of the current chapter veterans but please
let Val Rios know if he has missed someone.
